St. Antony

The St. Antony vineyards are in the prestigious "Roter Hang" section of the Rheinhessen that is know for the deeply flavored and mineral rich wines from the iron enriched (the Roter, or Red part of the name) clay soils.  Our initial selection is of three of their wines and I will look to add more once I've created more awareness about their wonderful wines.

The closeness to the Rhine results in deep mineral deposits in the vineyards

The Wines

Weissburgunder 2017 (OC, NF)

This is very interesting and pleasant Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) with aromas of apples, pears, and honeysuckle. There are citrusy flavors with lemony notes and also flavors of honeydew melon.  Overall this is light and refreshing, has good balance, and perfect acidity.

Food pairings would include sole, sea bass, seafood salads, grilled chicken, baked chicken, pasta with garlic and oil or a light cream sauce, vegetable stir fry, Asian noodle dishes, green salads, and hard cheeses.

Blaufrankisch  “Am Turm” 2016 (OC, NF)

This is a very expressive Blaufrankisch aromas of fresh baked bread, rich plums, and cherry compote.  Flavors are of dark cherries, dark plums, and a hint of cocoa.  There is a medium body but which saturates your palate.  The rich flavors are balanced and complemented by mild acidity and tannins.

Food pairings would include Filet Mignon, New York Steak, lamb, duck, venison, wild boar, salmon, grilled tuna, spicy Asian beef dishes, pasta with mild tomato sauce, grilled vegetables, and other Asian stir fry and noodle dishes.

Nierstein Pinot  Noir 2016 (OC, NF)

This is an artfully crafted wine using 30% whole cluster fermentation and 30% new oak barrels during the maturation.  Aromas include cherries, blackberries, boysenberries, blueberries, and hints of cantaloupe and mocha.  Flavors include dark cherries, red plums, and ripe strawberries.  There is a medium body, a fully saturated and refreshing overall mouthfeel, good balance and acidity, and nice tannins complementing the finish.

Food pairings would include Filet Mignon, New York Steak, beef stew, short ribs, veal chops, pork chops, roast pork, grilled tuna, clams and mussels, tomato based seafood soups, Asian beef and pork dishes, mild curries, Mexican beef, pork, and chicken dishes, grilled vegetables, vegetable casseroles or creamy vegetable dishes, charcuterie, sausages, and mild cheese.
